::: Skills recognition policy :::

The CCP recognises that through other formal courses paid or unpaid work experience, community/voluntary work or life experiences, potential students might already have the competencies necessary for them to be assessed for some modules. Please approach any staff member for information about this.

On application Recognition of Current Competences (RCC)/Skills Recognition will be assessed through a range of methods, which reflect the nature of the module applied for. These methods could include written tests, oral examinations, examples of previous documentation and the presentation of portfolios.

RCC/Skills Recognition may consist of:

  • Learning acquired in a "credentialed" context other than a university or TAFE, such as a course offered by a private enterprise or other professional body.
  • Learning via an "uncredentialed" context such as relevant work or professional experience in a visual art context.

Prior learning will be assessed to make sure that it is comparable in context and standard of learning outcomes with the CCP's curriculum. The standards applied in assessing RCC will not be greater than those required to pass the relevant component of the course.

Staff assessing the applicant's evidence submitted for RCC will have a detailed knowledge of the award /subject in which credit is sought.

Applications for Credit Transfer and RCC must be made on the standard form and must be submitted in a timely manner to Administration prior to the start of the course accompanied by the non-refundable administration fees.

Applications must be accompanied with any relevant transcripts/evidence to support the application.

All applicants will be required to attend an interview and to submit a portfolio of work to support their application at the interview.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application and will not be considered on a partial (percentage) basis, therefore either credit will be granted for the entire subject applied for or will need to be completed in its entirety.

Only successful outcomes will be recorded on the student file and transcript upon enrolment in a course and payment of appropriate levy.

An enrolled student may appeal the outcome of the results of their RCC/Skills Recognition application but only within one working week (i.e. 5 days) of the results being posted to the applicant. All appeals will state the grounds on which the appeal is made and must be made in writing.

::: Skills recognition & RCC information/procedure :::

Below are the steps you need to take to explore/complete this process.

INFORMATION
Step 1.
Make an appointment with the Director of the School to discuss the procedure and the possibility of eligibility. The Director will help you to decide whether your experience so far can help you gain one or more of the modules leading to the qualification you need. All information and expectations required of you the applicant will be explained in detail at this stage including procedures and costs.

INITIAL ADVICE AND SUPPORT
Step 2.

The Director (or their representative) will provide you with the copies of the competencies needed to be demonstrated/evidenced for the modules you feel you have the necessary experience to be assessed for. You can only be assessed for the whole module and not just parts of it.

Step 3.
The Director (or their representative) will explain each of the competencies and what is needed for you to achieve a successful assessment. At this stage please feel free to ask any questions in order to get as much clarification you require to ensure there are no doubts to your application. Remember the Director (or their representative) cannot teach you the competencies at this point - this is of course why we conduct classes.

Step 4.
Now you should be in an informed position to decide whether you wish to proceed with your application i.e.,

Do you feel confident you can evidence the required skills to pass assessment?

Perhaps you may feel that it is better for you to complete the module instead.

Remember you have not paid any application fees yet.

If you have decided to proceed with your application for Recognition of Current Competencies...

APPLICATION STAGE
Step 5
.
Fill in the application form and attach the necessary application fee detailed on the form.

ASSESSMENT STAGE
Step 6.

Upon receipt of your formal application, a suitable time will be negotiated with you the applicant to conduct your assessment - this will in any case be as soon as can be deemed convenient for you. Your assessment will usually be conducted by the Director of the School with either the Education Manager or another Lecturer knowledgeable in the specific area for which you have applied. You may at this point request the attendance of a student representative (usually the Gallery Director) at your assessment; this is to ensure the highest level of impartiality for the proceedings.

POST-ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE
Step 7.

This is where you get to know the results of your assessment. You will be informed of the outcome and appropriately counselled accordingly.

If you have not been successful and require more experience/learning, the Director (or their representative) will advise you on the best way to either gain the required knowledge or to improve your performance. Remember you will not be taught at this stage but appropriate classes or workshops can be recommended.

If you have been successful, you now have the module/s to your credit for which you will receive a statement of attainment.

Whatever happens, a record of your achievement will be entered on your student academic transcript only if you have been successful with your assessment.

Step 8.
If you are not satisfied with the proceedings/outcome, please discuss this with the Education Manager in the first instance.

If you still feel dissatisfied with the outcome and have a grievance or that the process has been unfair you can still initiate a grievance using the CCP.

Grievance Procedure.
If you are not satisfied with the follow up response by the Centre you are advised to contact the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations and seek advice.
