Aim
If you know absolutely nothing about the camera then this course is for you! This subject is especially for the novice who owns (or will own) a 35mm film camera or digital SLR and wishes to learn how to operate it. Students will learn about all basic camera functions and basic darkroom or digital skills.

The Introduction to Photography class is offered in both film and digital variations. Students taking the digital class who wish to progress into the Certificate IV or Diploma program must complete the darkroom requirements either as a class or workshop topic.

Duration
9 x 3 hours per week (27 hours)

Topics covered in both the film and digital classes:

  • Cameras
  • Lenses
  • Shutter speeds and f-stops
  • Correct exposures / image capture
  • Creativity

Film specific topics:

  • Film processing and chemistry
  • Contact sheets and enlarging
  • Test strips and print controls
  • Dodging and burning
  • Photographic retouching

Digital specific topics:

  • Resolution
  • File formats (JPG, TIF, RAW)
  • White balance
  • File management
  • Colour management
  • Histograms

Prerequisites:
Students must have their own manually operated 35mm or larger format film camera or digital SLR. Please consult the school if you're unsure if your camera meets the requirements.

Materials:
For the film class all chemistry and other consumables are supplied, it is expected that students will supply their own film and paper. Digital class students will be responsible for their own printing costs.

Tuition fees for courses are outlined on the Timetable page. Note that only the prices for scheduled courses for the term indicated in the timetable are given. Not all classes are offered every term. The timetable is updated to indicate the courses and fees for the following term about six weeks into the current term.
