The Light Gallery

The Light Gallery is an important part of The Centre for Creative Photography's concept and operates as a commercial gallery. Exhibitions change approximately every six weeks, enabling students and the public to view a range of photographic work drawn from the local and interstate artistic arena. This provides a valuable experience for students to be involved with gallery practice and to view their own work in a professional context via the bi-annual student exhibitions or as curated shows.

Most exhibiting artists agree to deliver an informal public lecture about their exhibition in keeping with the educational objectives of the CCP.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday 9am till 5pm. Other times by appointment. Hours may be irregular outside school terms, so call the CCP beforehand if unsure. Ph. 08 8354 0839.

::: Gavin Blake - Movie Portraits :::

Gavin Blake - Georgie DowneyThe "Movie Portraits" are a result of my most recent experiments with photographic processes used at the event of its invention in the 1830s; stereoscopy, cyanotypes, light experiments. I am a photographic purist and as such, digital imagery holds no interest for me. I prefer the "real to the imagined – grain to the pixel". Consequently these portraits involve no more than raw light and a ten-minute exposure, which the subject endures in much the same way the first photographic portraits were made. The main difference is that my subjects do not have headrests as were used 150 years ago to keep them still. They sit and contemplate the event with a talisman of their choice; still versus the need to breathe. Given the amount of time the sitter bequeaths the lens, this record becomes as much a collective memory for us as much as it becomes a single-frame short movie of the event. Interestingly for me, these images are the most painterly of all my productions given the nature of the approach of a collective time represented in each photograph.

Similarly, as with photographs, I have found that even when the subject has moved during the sitting, which is clearly the case, once encapsulated, their chance movements forever remain frozen in time – traced by the embalming process of the negative provided by the camera.

Like the photograph they are a record of a conjunction of events, but by the very nature of their specific construction, each piece is rendered as more of a movie rather than a specific image... I'm now thinking of our collective memory of the initial event which we recorded.

::: CCP staff show :::

Lucy Spartalis::: Lucy Spartalis - Portraits :::

Now showing - Lucy Spartalis' portraits are showing in The Light Gallery from June 30 2008. Lucy's closely observed studies often display a quirky dry humour. Lucy works as a professional photographer (Lucy Spartalis Photography), and assists regularly in studio classes at The CCP. She recently received 3 Silver Awards at the South Australian Professional Photography Awards.

More of Lucy's work can be seen at www.juxtaposition.com.au and jpgmag.com.

James Stocks::: Half of One (plus a bit) :::

James Stocks' evocative black & white street photography shows at The Light Gallery from May 6 2008. The atmospheric images capture the essence of the backpacker experience.

James says of this work "The images are selected from four years of work. During this time I lived in both the south and the north of England and hitchhiked in Europe. I have used a Lomo camera in some of the works. I enjoy observing humanity and capturing who we are, what we do, the environments we create for ourselves and the dialogue between us".

Faster! by Syd Winer::: The Riders :::

The Riders - photographic works by Adelaide artist Syd Winer ran at the Light Gallery from March 28 until May 2.

The abstract and dynamic images in this exhibition made use of motion blur and the distinctive colours and grain characteristic of colour infrared film. The motion blur was captured in-camera by combining slow shutter speeds and camera panning. A wide angle lens further added to the distortion and impression of speed.

More details and images from the show can be seen at the photographer's website - www.winercreative.com.au
