Artist statement:
Looking at the sea, the sky and being in the water whilst standing on the beach. Dawn - day - dusk - night. What results are the impressions left in my consciousness: being with and within? The beach is real and at the same time ethereal. It is here, under my feet, seemingly solid. The water surges around my ankles. Waves, like the clouds, are ephemeral. Awed by the boundless sea and sky, gazing into the aether.

Copyright Ervin Janek::: Fragments :::

The exhibition,"Fragments - Ervin Janek - 2000-2006" is to be shown across two venues - The Light Gallery here at The CCP and HQ Gallery at the Headquarters Studio Collective www.hq-studio.com. Ervin will be giving an artists talk at the HQ Gallery on Thursday July 5 at 6pm. Fragments runs at the HQ Gallery 29 June to 20 July and at The Light Gallery 2 July to 29 July. Ervin will also be running the experimental photography course at The CCP's Winter School on Wednesday July 11.

The exhibitions show selected images from across 3 of the artist's recent bodies of work. Ervin Janek's colour images are done in camera by re-photographing projections of his slides and negatives, which he then adds cut-paper collages, paint, pastels and found objects to the images. He also combines positive and negative images, sandwiching and re-photographing them into unusual, technically elaborate, but ultimately simple final images. His black and white images are large silver gelatin prints. Janek positions his models against a rich black background washing them with light. Intended to lose a lot of the highlight detail, the subtlety of the images is accentuated by his black and white printing. His subjects are enigmatic, confronting, questioning, moody and playful. Some of these images are also doubly exposed or projected and re-photographed to distort their shapes and increase the drama.
